First year of study

The aim of the first year is to provide a thorough and broad introduction to sustainable forest and nature management:

  • Provide students with a basic understanding of the principles and processes that underpin sustainable forest and nature management, including the social and environmental contexts.
  • Develop students' theoretical and practical skills within numeracy, communication, information and communication technology (ICT), teamwork, self management, and professional development in a forest and nature-specific context.
  • Inculcate the values of scholarship: inquiry, reflection, integrity, open-mindedness, evidence-based thinking, and collegiality.
  • Enable students to make an informed choice of area of specialisation in their second SUFONAMA year.

After the first year, students can choose freely among the five specialisations in the second year. However, students cannot stay at their first year institution.

During the first year of study, students must complete a total of at least 60 ECTS credits choosing from the courses listed at their first year university (University of Copenhagen, Bangor University or University of Göttingen).

The first study year includes three joint courses (20 ECTS) that are mandatory for all SUFONAMA students.
